When I write, I usually type out what's -supposed- to happen, then write down the general gist of my favorite parts(so I don't forget them), and then write my least favorite parts (because if I don't I'll never be able to stay motivated to write them, then finish it off).
Then I let it sit for a few days and read it again, erase the 80% and rewrite them to make the parts flow together, and do that a few times before I put it online :\
Just sharing my creative process.

I myself tend to pick whatever scene is most vivid in my mind at the moment and write it as far as it goes. Once I have several scenes completed, I begin to put them together like a puzzle, creating bridges to connect them. I don't need to worry about losing motivation as much as Rae does, and I find that starting at the beginning just runs me into a solid wall over and over again. Everyone has their own way of writing and you'll have to find your own, but that's how I do it and maybe you can pick up an idea or two.
