My Windows Media Player recently updated itself, but the only thing that got better was the skin. It looks neater now, but it doesn't make up for other shortcomings. The spot that says how long a song is always reads 1:37, the buttons to access the internet are more prominent than the options, it keeps trying to share my music with people in my network (which includes everyone in my dorm since I use the local internet) and most annoying to me is that the song listing is fragmented into sections. The sections are labeled so I can find stuff easily enough, but I generally want all my songs together in one spot under one list. Now I can do this by making a playlist, but I'd need to update it whenever I got new songs. The previous media player settings did this pretty well and I used it instead of VLC player for just that reason. So as I see it, there are two options. The first is I figure out how to refigure Windows Media Player 11 so that these aren't problems, and the second is I find a way to 'downgrade' into the better version. (on a side note, I THINK I've disabled the sharing thing, but I'm not sure)

If its just music files, I suggest using Winamp. The Media Library in it is very useful, gives me alot of information right now...*click click*

Have you tried using Winamp? They update often at times and other times, don't. I found it better than WMP ever will be honestly. I mean, I love it, has plenty of skins to choose from and such.

Damn you Paul. =P

No I haven't, but it seems worth a try. However, would I be able to remove WMP from my computer afterwards? I remember trying to remove it when I first got VLC and it didn't take. (I was later glad for this because I couldn't figure out how to get VLC to be nice about playing all my songs in one list without hunting them all down individually, which I didn't have patience for) On another side note, I found out why the the time display was wrong. The time display matched the song perfectly actually. The problem was that it keeps playing the song AFTER the song displayed on the list which has a different time than the one shown. Of course now that's another problem with it. I'll be back later with news of whether winamp works or not.

Foobar2000 is undoubtedly the simplest music player there is.

I don't think you can downgrade to WMP 10 but you should be able to uninstall it. THey make tools for such things.

Squeeeeee! I'm loving winamp so much more than WMP. I especially like the hotkeys that I can use even when not actually in the program. The only annoying part is that it shows up as a program in the taskbar, but that's ignorable. And I think I managed to rollback WMP to version 10 as well, although I can't seem to remove it entirely. However, random internet searching tells me this is normal and microsoft is being stupid. Overall, I think I'm happy with what I've managed to get.

In Winamp: Preferences -> General Preferences -> Uncheck Taskbar, check System Tray. Pick icon for system tray. Click close.

Thank you. Everything's perfect now (aside from the lack of removal of wmp 10, but that's just not gonna happen...)

What?

Personally, I leave the latest version of WMP installed as I do use it for video files every so often, especially WMV files. I just tell WMP its not the default player for most things. AVIs/MPGs are associated with VLC by default, but I like having the "Open With > Media Player" as an option if needed.

My WMP complains whenever I try to play a non audio file on it. And audio files work better on winamp. *shrug* I suppose it's always an option.

Odd, no clue why it would do that. You can go ahead and uninstall it or go directly to Microsoft's website, download WMP 11 and reinstall it. But as I said, I use it primary for WMV files since it plays WMVs the best (lets face it, Microsoft designed it that way).
